From the silver screen to the canvas of our daily lives, the mantra “enjoy the little things” reverberates like a timeless melody. Inspired by the cinematic wisdom of Rule #32 in Zombieland, this philosophy has woven itself into the tapestry of my existence. Framed in my office and home, this sentiment serves as a constant reminder to cherish the ordinary moments that are the essence of true happiness. If you haven’t watched Zombieland, perhaps you’re acquainted with the adage, “Enjoy the little things in life because one day you’ll look back and realize they were the big things.” And so, I have cultivated a roster of life’s simplest joys, an ever-evolving collection of treasures to savor.
I keep a list of small, ordinary things I love. This is kept as a note in my phone as a reminder to not overlook the ordinary things that bring us joy.
- Waking up naturally, from sunlight, sans alarm
- The perfect cup of coffee in the morning
- Finishing a great book
- ..and then sharing that book with a friend
- Cozy couch days
- Rainy days indoors
- Hearing a song from the past that you haven’t heard in years
- Crossing off everything on your to-do list
- Finding an old album of photos
- Laugh-until-you-cry moments with friends and family
- Sunsets
- Conversations with strangers
- Kind gestures
- Spontaneous dance parties in the kitchen
- Unexpected mail
- Discovering a new recipe
- Fresh flowers (peonies, to be specific!)
As I continue to curate my list of life’s little treasures, I invite you to reflect on your own. What are the small, everyday joys that weave a thread of contentment through your life? In embracing these moments, we unlock the true essence of living. What are some of the little things in your life that you enjoy?
