I recently spent just under two weeks in Europe (more to come on that later..) and found myself in London for one final night before heading back home to Houston the following day. After previously spending a week in the city, knocking off the top tourist attractions, I wanted to dedicate this afternoon to less hustle-and-bustle. As the sun cast its gentle rays over the bustling streets of London, I found myself on the threshold of an unforgettable adventure in the heart of the city’s entertainment epicenter: the West End theatre district. With only one afternoon remaining before bidding adieu to this captivating city, the allure of London’s theatrical charm beckoned me for one final curtain call.
If you find yourself with a spare afternoon in London, there’s no better way to immerse yourself in the city’s cultural heart than by exploring the famed West End theatre district. Follow this guide to make the most of your time and create unforgettable memories.
First stop: Frozen the Musical
I would suggest starting your adventure by selecting a matinee show that resonates with you.
Upon arriving in London via train from Paris, we quickly made our way to our hotel to drop our bags and take the underground to the theater district. Our first stop was to see Frozen the Musical at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. We opted for an afternoon show (2:00 PM), and what a treat this show was! The audience was filled with all ages. Having watched the movie a dozen times, I really enjoyed the consistent storyline, while they also integrated new song numbers (with more than a handful of adult-friendly jokes). The cast, the costumes, the set, the music – the show was a 10! If you’re looking to meet cast members after the show, the Stage Door is located on the street, on the lefthand side of the building.
Second stop: Post-Show Drinks
After the show, we made our way to a local pub, known to be frequented by cast members and other locals: The Marquess of Anglesey. Located in the heart of Covent Garden, The Marquess offered a variety of beer, wine, cocktails, and food. Guests could find seating among their 3 floors, all of which brought in natural lighting and featured top tier staff. This local hot spot even has a roof terrace featuring views of Covent Garden’s skyline and “theatreland.” We opted for a round of espresso martinis here (which were delicious!). At Marquess, we spontaneously made a decision to purchase tickets to another musical for that evening and were then on the hunt for a nearby dinner option!
Third stop: Italian Eats for Dinner
As the afternoon progresses, satisfy your appetite with a delightful Italian dinner at Prima Sapori d’Italia. Dine al fresco on their inviting patio and relish the flavors of authentic Italian dishes. With an extensive menu featuring fresh pasta, pizza, salads, and more, you’ll have plenty of options to choose from. Pair your meal with a glass of wine or your preferred beverage, and savor the culinary journey.
Fourth Stop: Explore Covent Garden’s Charm
After dinner, we had a little bit of time to kill before making our way to the next show. It began to rain, so we made our way to the Covent Garden shopping mall to take a leisurely stroll through the area. Filled with farmer’s market style pop-up shops, along with flagship stores for Anine Bing, Chanel, Free People, Jo Malone, Strathberry, Vuori, Zara, and more, this vibrant area was brimming with people and fun street performers. If you’re looking for an all-in-one-place to check out, with shopping, food, and entertainment, definitely make your way here. Covent Garden’s charming streetscape provides the perfect backdrop for a leisurely exploration.
Final stop: Mrs. Doubtfire Musical
After seeing countless billboards and advertisements in the underground on the first leg of our trip, our spontaneous ticket purchase went to Mrs. Doubtfire! What a phenomenal cast and fun show. Held at Shaftesbury Theatre, this show included all of your favorite moments from the hit movie, plus more. I would definitely recommend.
After making our way out of the final show around 10 PM, our 8-hour whirlwind of a day (er, afternoon) seeing a double feature in the West End was just what we needed before heading home! London’s West End theatre district offers an afternoon of enchantment and discovery. From mesmerizing musicals to vibrant streets and delectable dining, each experience contributes to a tapestry of memories that will forever be associated with the heart of London’s cultural scene. Follow this guide to create your own unique journey through the West End and relish every moment of this captivating adventure.
